Ada Lovelace: imagination disciplined by proof

Before the computer existed, Ada Lovelace studied a machine that lived mostly in plans. She translated an account of Charles Babbage's proposed Analytical Engine, then expanded it with Notes of her own. In Note G, she set out a detailed method for calculating Bernoulli numbers. Her argument reached beyond arithmetic: a sufficiently designed engine could work with symbols according to rules. The machine was not completed in her lifetime.
